North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Project

Western North Carolina

EMH&T completed archaeological surveys for three projects totaling 20,971 feet of stream in Western North Carolina for stream mitigation credits. The projects entailed restoring channelized streams using natural channel design. The project corridors ranged from 50 to 150 feet on either side of existing streams. Because the projects were all located in close proximity to reliable waterways, the potential for encountering cultural resources was high. Using a combination of subsurface testing and surface collection, EMH&T archaeologists have surveyed and cleared all three projects through the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology. EMH&T also conducted a minor historic architectural survey in the area surrounding the project but despite the long history of the former colony, it was able to demonstrate that no historic buildings would be adversely affected.
