EMH&T Unity Park Project in Greenville, South Carolina is a Model of Sustainable Development

The Reedy River has been transformed into a park amenity serving as one of the many passive and active recreational opportunities in the new Unity Park. The park recently opened in May in Greenville, South Carolina, and is a model of sustainable development. EMH&T provided preliminary engineering services including: environmental analysis, stormwater master planning/policy review and development, studies for transportation and connectivity for area utilities, and shared parking, public street networks, gateways, complete streets, and accessibility/trails for the park and surrounding redevelopment area on the west side of downtown Greenville.

Our team members provided final engineering services related to public utility relocations, streets, parking, stormwater management (including innovative practices), and stream channel restoration. EMH&T also performed a full range of floodplain and environmental permitting services, including: a Nationwide Permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, a Flood Development Permit from the City of Greenville, and we procured a Letter of Map Revision from FEMA.

Faced with growing pains of an urban neighborhood, it was critical to the project to capture economic opportunity, while preserving the social fabric and diversity of a culturally rich neighborhood, and encouraging private investment—while creating a beloved public open space. Unity Park is now a gathering place for the community based on the integration of public open space with commercial uses that cater to park visitors, and those using the nearby Swamp Rabbit Trail.
